Grace. The burden of the brave

When power corrupts, what difference can one woman make? Grace, a physically handicapped woman, surprises everyone when she beats the corrupt political giants and becomes governor of the Philippine’s province Isabela. These elections her enemies join together to beat her, can Grace survive and make a lasting change?

Participatory Video

PV is a method I use to teach people to film their own story. It’s empowering, documenting people's experiences, needs and hopes from their own perspectives.

Football connects

In the craziness around this year’s World Cup, I am working on a film that shows how people from different countries connect through football. Young Dutch football players decided to link their club with an Ethiopian sports team and participate in an exchange program to Ethiopia. It’s always beautiful to see the magic happening when two cultures meet. Horizons are openend and prejudices altered. Sport is the connecting factor that makes all other differences fall away.

It reminds me of my first trip to Uganda during my studies in rural development. My eyes were opened wide to the differences in the world and never looked the same again. One participant strikingly expresses: “You must have seen something in real life before you to have a complete picture. This applies not only to a country, but also to people!” Through this life-changing experience, participants will look at the world with different eyes.

Clublinking, a program of the KNVB, connects Dutch sports teams with similar teams around the world, to show young people that they play a role in a world where we are all bear responsibility for. As part of the program the participants film their activities and experiences during the trip. From these video’s I produce a documentary film, which will be use for promotion and reflection by the team and their supporters. Back to my roots with work that I love doing the most!

Soundtrack Grace

Awesome adventure today: sound recording in a famous studio in the heart of Amsterdam! Two friends, Boudewijn Zuijderhoudt and Merel Collenteur, offered to compose the music for my documentary film  ‘Grace. The burden of the brave’. And they did this with lots of enthusiasm, skills and dedication. Today, in one long evening we recorded and finalized the complete soundtrack of the film which was magical. Last weeks I have been working with audio-wizard Mark Glynn on the soundmix of the film. It’s pure magic what these guys can do to bring your music and sound alive!

PV with refugees in ‘Vluchtkerk’

Participatory video training with refugees living in the Vluchtkerk in Amsterdam. Many journalists, photographers and filmmakers rush to the Vluchtkerk to record the situation and write their stories. However, the refugees tell me they do not feel heard at all. Together we look for the stories that they themselves want to tell the world.

PV with Dutch soccer team

Participatory video is not only about spreading your message and learning how to make video’s, it’s also lots of fun! Tears of laughter at yesterday’s PV training with nationally selected soccer girls. They spoke about their lives; school, friends, family and of course soccer! They shared their expectations around the exchange trip to India where they will meet fellow soccer girls. What will they see? How will they feel? What are their fears? In groups they translated these questions into story boards and made some beautiful video-stories all by themselves! Ready to go to India!

PV with refugees

This week I worked on a creative video project with asylum seekers youth. We challenged them to tell their stories with songs, dances and video animations and their creativity amazed me! The biggest challenge was to be unrecognizable in the videoclip, for their own protection. However, this only resulted in more creativity, like these video-projections on body parts.

About me-image

About me

Everyone has a story to tell. As a filmmaker I love to tell people’s stories in a personal and touching way. Stories that matter and will make a change. Or, I teach people to tell their own story.

What I do

What I do

I create documentaries and corporate films for a wide variety of organizations. Trained as a visual anthropologist, I am able to translate diverse information in a visual product. Content-driven camerawork with the right atmosphere for the audience concerned.
Secondly I train people in video making via participatory video workshops. PV is a powerful tool for social change, giving people a voice to tell their own story.
